> Steuben Schurz Gesellschaft (SSG)

The Steuben Schurz Gesellschaft is the oldest existing German-American friendship organization in Germany and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2008.

“Providing stability and friendship in a challenging environment” is the organisation’s motto.
The goal is to further German-American friendship and to foster the international understanding in numerous ways. Currently the SSG fosters German-American relations by:

  • bringing together people form the management level of science, culture, politics and economy with Americans in Germany and other German-American organizations.
  • questioning the good relationship in a positive socio-political way.
  • fostering meetings and the interchanging of ideas between young Germans and young Americans in each case in the other country.
  • stabilizing the liberal-democratic shared basis developed over centuries.

German - American Interns - Program

The program arranges internships for students in all fields from German and American universities with the aim to get in contact with the partner country. Students attending this program acquire varied insights in culture, history and work routine. Interested parties like students, employers, sponsors and partners have a great opportunity to get involved with the German-American promotion of young people.

Both eponyms of the organization were Germans who achieved high esteem in the United States. Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben assisted George Washington in the war of independence and was appointed to be the general inspector of the army.
Carl Schurz fought against slavery supporting Abraham Lincoln and became Secretary of the Interior in the administration of President Hayes. His wife founded America’s first kindergarten in Wisconsin, Hessen’s partner state.

The activities of the society include lectures and discussions on political, business and culture subjects which are offered on a monthly basis.
Furthermore, the society has turned its particular attention to providing scholarships – aptly named “Berlin Airlift Scholarships”- to young American students.
